The aim of the project is to explore which kind of activating, self directed methods of instruction are used at the Finnish universities, and how students information needs, seeking and use are influenced by these methods.Questions of concern are: How is students information behavior affected by for example problem-based learning What kind of information is needed for learning purposes Which kind of sources and channels for information are used and how Which factors, [e.g. personal, interpersonal, situational]affects information seeking and use and how do this factors affect How is the information used in the process of learning The data about the process of learning and information behavior shall be collected by interviews, observation and diaries.Because of the qualitative methods of collecting and analysing data shall the number of study objects be 10-15 persons.Results of the qualitative analysis shall be tested in a larger population by using also quantitative methods.The results which are expected from the analysis are to acquire more knowledge of human information behavior as contribution to the theory construction in the information science and to form the basis for development of information systems supporting learning.
